HealthConnect One is pleased to share an update on our advocacy in Illinois to expand access to lactation support.
On April 17, 2026, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) published proposed amendments to its Medical Assistance programs, including changes related to lactation support services and which provider types are eligible for Medicaid reimbursement. During the public comment period, HC One joined partners in submitting comments calling for broader access to lactation support for Illinois families.
Our comments emphasized three key priorities:
- Expanding the number of covered lactation support visits to better meet families’ needs throughout the postpartum period.
- Recognizing and reimbursing a broader range of lactation support providers, including lactation counselors, educators, breastfeeding specialists, and peer counselors, in addition to currently recognized provider types.
- Ensuring access across diverse settings, including hospitals, birth centers, homes, community-based organizations, WIC clinics, healthcare offices, telehealth, and support groups.
